THE MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH CENTER

THE MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH CENTER

San Ysidro Health Center (SYHC) is once again on the move to improve access to primary health care services for women and children living in the South Region. SYHC is building a new Maternal and Child Health Center on its main campus in the community of San Ysidro.

For almost 40 years, SYHC has been providing high-quality, low-cost, primary health and dental services to South Bay residents. Our main health center is located in San Ysidro and three excellent satellite medical clinics are located in Chula Vista , National City and Otay. In recent years, the demand for women and children's health services in SYHC's service area, the South Region of San Diego County, has increased significantly due to:

The growing number of low-income households that turn to SYHC as their preferred provider of health services.

The growing number of local small employers dropping insurance coverage for their employees. Without health insurance coverage, local residents are now accessing SYHC services.

Significant population growth in the South Region. A recent publication, 2006 San Diego County Healthcare Safety Net Study, reported a significant population growth that is expected to occur over the next several decades, equating to a 31.6 percent increase in the demand for community clinic services. This study also identified a need for an additional 21 community clinics by 2025.

OUR POPULATION

In 2007, SYHC provided medical, dental and behavioral services to over 52,000 registered patients. A significant number of our patient population consists of low-income, underserved, uninsured area residents. Approximately 90% of our patients are Latino. Last year SYHC cared for nearly 14,500 children under the age of 10. This is particularly important since about 30% of Latino children have one or more development delays and 69% of preschoolers have untreated dental disease. In addition, SYHC has nearly 5,000 patients that are women of child-bearing age and 18,849 female patients that will benefit from increased access to women's health services.

SYHC'S NEW MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH CENTER

To address the healthcare needs of the San Ysidro community, SYHC's Board of Trustees approved the development and construction of a new 28,000 square foot, state-of-the-art Maternal and Child Heath Center . The principle goal of SYHC's new MCHC is to develop a “one stop” health services facility for women and children. By clustering the essential women and children's services in one building, access to medical, dental, behavioral and nutritional services will expand significantly.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP

Please take this opportunity to help us build The Maternal and Child Health Center and renovate our existing facility by making a tax-deductible donation to SYHC's Capital Campaign. Your participation will help SYHC introduce new programs and services, expand and improve existing services and service delivery and increase access to care to our dynamic area's rapidly growing population.

SYHC's new MCHC will advance the health center's mission of providing high quality, comprehensive care to families in a culturally and linguistically proficient and supportive environment. The MCHC will increase patient service capacity as well as promote improved health outcomes through family-centered services. These services, in addition to primary, dental and behavioral care, include social services, health education and disease prevention and Women, Infant and Children (WIC) nutritional activities.
