Our Culture

There is a famous quote that says, "culture eats strategy for breakfast". This implies that the culture of the organization determines success regardless of how effective their strategy may be. Culture at San Ysidro Health is about the way employees act in critical situations, how they manage pressure, respond to various challenges, treat patients, and treat each other.

From a cultural perspective, we continue efforts to ensure team members are contributing to a workspace that welcomes people of different identities, ethnicities, and genders. Managing groupthink is the beginning of the road to enabling diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB). Having the same cultural experiences can often create the same decision-making and problem-solving energies. We know that an inclusive and belonging culture can be achieved through DEIB awareness, education, clear organization processes, and most importantly, accountability. What you permit, you promote. What you allow, you encourage. What you condone, you own.

San Ysidro health is becoming even more diverse, with individuals from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds joining our workforce. It is critical that we incorporate DEIB education in our leadership development programs. Doing so helps our leaders become aware of behaviors that don’t promote a culture of inclusion and promotes the expectation of acting as role-models for what behaviors are appropriate and welcoming.

Finally, continuing to celebrate our DEIB success is essential for our sustained growth. Showing appreciation in public and across multiple channels fosters a positive workplace culture while advancing innovation, collaboration, and recognition. Moreover, it encourages and inspires our workforce to continue to go above and beyond serving patients and communities while engaging thoughtfully with each other.
