Research & Health Promotion
As a trusted health center organization serving a diverse patient population, it is important that San Ysidro Health patients are represented in health research. Historically, people of color have been underrepresented in opportunities of this kind.
With the development of our Research & Health Promotion Department and our participation in the All of Us program, San Ysidro Health is working to ensure the future of medicine is inclusive, equitable, and community-based.
San Ysidro Health’s Research & Health Promotion Department was established in 2003. The department works to promote the health and well-being of the San Ysidro Health patients and surrounding communities. Currently, the department offers about 30 free programs that cover topics such as healthy living, nutrition, chronic diseases (for example, diabetes, hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases, and obesity), family planning, cancer prevention and linkage to care, and more.

Research Review Committee
San Ysidro Health’s Research and Health Promotion Department works in collaboration with San Diego State University, the University of California San Diego, and other organizations to develop and implement grant-funded research projects. All research projects at San Ysidro Health are approved by an academic Institutional Review Board (IRB) as well as the San Ysidro Health Research Review Committee.
San Ysidro Health’s Research Review Committee is the central hub for all project inquiries, including research, quality improvement, and surveillance projects. The Research Review Committee is a multifaceted team comprised of San Ysidro Health staff members in research, quality, health promotion, and administration departments, who are passionate about our patients and community.

All of Us Research Program
San Ysidro Health is one of 8 Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH) to participate in the All of Us Research Program.
The All of Us Research Program is a program run by the Precision Medicine Initiative, launched by President Obama in 2016. The goal of All of Us is to engage a large and diverse group of people across the United States to collect health data in support of ongoing research. Participants could be asked to share their physical measurements, biosamples (blood and urine), and medical record as part of the program. This information is then entered into a database that provides information to research studies that could help discover new disease risk factors, treatments, or other medical breakthroughs. Over 500,000 people nationwide have joined the All of Us program.
To date, San Ysidro Health has enrolled 2,188 patients in the All of Us program with a 65% retention rate, which is well above target levels. SY Health is entering Phase 6 of the project with the goal of enrolling 491 new patients into the program and maintaining a minimum of a 40% retention rate.

LUNA-E
LUNA-E (Latinos Understanding Need Adherence using E-Health) is a 5-year randomized clinical trial funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), working in collaboration with the South Bay Latino Research Center, to study diabetes management and outcomes. The goal of LUNA-E is to improve glycemic control and emotional distress by implementing a higher level integrated care team for patient care, which includes a behavioral health provider, care coordinator, and primary care physician.
The enhanced care teams are deployed to support San Ysidro Health patients who self-identify as Hispanic/Latino, are 18 years of age or older, have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and have recent uncontrolled A1c of ≥8%.

COVID-19 Research Projects
CO-CREATE-Ex
Community-engaged Optimization of COVID-19 Rapid Evaluation and Testing Experiences (CO-CREATE-Ex) is a National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded program in collaboration with the University of California, San Diego, and the Global ARC. The CO-CREATE-Ex project aims to provide a sustainable and flexible way to increase equitable access to COVID-19 testing in the San Ysidro community. This project has three implementation strategies that include on-site walk-up staff support tent, promotores-led COVID-19 test counseling and preventative care reminders, and vending machines (aka Vend-A-Kits) that dispenses free FDA-authorized COVID-19 home self-testing kits.
COVID-19 home tests are available to San Ysidro Health patients and community members ages 2 and older. Vend-A-Kit will be available to dispense test kits 24/7. It will take approximately 5-10 minutes for participants to consent, receive a code, and obtain the test. Staff will be available on-site to support participants using Vend-A-Kit from Monday - Thursday from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM at San Ysidro Health Center (4004 Beyer Blvd, San Ysidro, CA 92173) and Chula Vista Medical Plaza (687 3rd Ave, Chula Vista, CA 91910).

Project 2VIDA!
Project 2VIDA! (or SARS-CoV-2 Vaccine Intervention Delivery for Adults in Southern California) is a 5-year research study that supports San Ysidro Health’s vaccination efforts through expanded outreach, education, and community engagement. Activities include community presentations, education campaigns on social media, and availability of mobile clinical services at popular community locations (such as grocery stores, shopping centers, and churches).
The 2VIDA! study evaluates the preliminary impact of these efforts, compared to the normal standard-of-care for COVID-19 vaccination services, among Latinx and African American adults older than 18 years in San Diego. San Ysidro Health staff are focused on making an impact on total vaccinations administered, personal protective equipment kits distributed, and referrals for care. The study also assesses feasibility, acceptability, and vaccine intervention effects of the 2VIDA! model.

San Ysidro Health offers care coordination services to help patients with their individual healthcare journeys. As part of this Program, patients will be connected with a Care Coordinator, who will provide them with hands-on support in navigating healthcare appointments and referrals, improving overall health, and making healthier lifestyle choices.
